You need to make the grocery store fun! I’ve been thinking about different ways I can accomplish that and not spend any more money than I already do (maybe less even, although I doubt that is possible and still have fun).
I could have fun shopping for anything I think, so it isn’t hard to make grocery shopping at least moderately enjoyable for me. But ways to make it so fun that it squashes my shopping urge for a whole week… I don’t know. There are a few things I do though.
First, I take my time. I don’t linger endlessly staring adoringly at potatoes or anything, but I don’t rush. I look around and take in all the sights and smells (and sometimes, free samples!). Nothing makes me happier than a list, a cart, and a few hours to myself.
Second, I do not go down aisles that are not on my list. This may seem the opposite from the “taking my time” thing, but the easiest way for my enjoyment of grocery shopping to be sucked out of me is looking at a lot of stuff I can’t buy. If I wanted to do that I’d just go to Target.
Third, I make it a point to comparison shop. I make sure to look at the unit price of items, or use a calculator to figure it out if the unit price is not listed, and make sure I’m getting the best deal possible. Nothing makes me happier than knowing I am saving money and getting the best deal possible on things I need to get anyway.
And finally, I look through my cart before I get in line and make sure that I haven’t forgotten anything on my list, and that I don’t have anything in the cart that was impulsive and I can put back. I hate getting home and realizing I forgot something, and I also hate when I spend money on things I don’t want in the first place. If I’m going to get something extra, it better be something that I want so much it stands up to my cart inspection and I’m willing to snowflake an equal amount of money to get.
What makes grocery shopping fun for you?
