Hey,
I am just catching up on my blog reading. Saw you have had car problems, I'm sorry :(
Are they already fixing your car? It's probably too late for this, but is your husband handy with cars at all? The crankcase or something like that cracked in our Ranger and the engine had to be replaced. We bought a refurbished engine for $1000 or so online and my husband and his friends put it in themselves. I think it took another $100 or so in extra things in addition but it saved us a bunch. He had tried taking the original engine completely apart and fixing it but it was completely cracked through and needed to be replaced.
I'm sorry-cars can be such a pain!
Oh-and try not to make yourself feel badly, just imagine what this situation would have done to you a year or two ago. At least now you have some cash set aside and won't have to charge it all (or worse, go out and finance a brand new car). You have done amazingly well this past year. Keep focusing on that :)
