(Not Quite) Frugal Cakes and Yard Stories: A Festival and Carnival

This week’s Festival of Frugality was hosted at Money and Values and “takes the cake” featuring along with all the great articles, many many pictures of decadent cakes. They didn’t look very frugal but oh so yummy! My post about Being Frugal Can Be Fun was included along with many other great submissions. A few that caught my attention were:

This week’s Carnival of Money Stories was hosted at Money for Military and only eight money stories were featured, including my story of becoming an Accidental Investor. Two other stories I particularly enjoyed were:

  • My Yard is a Waste of Time and Money at Financial Dominance, actually a guest post from glblguy at Gather Little By Little. I feel the same way though - yard care seems like such an expensive hassle for little reward since our grass seems to die anyway. What to do….

Be sure to check out the great festival and carnival and pick your own favorites!

  1. I’m glad you liked my ginger beer plant post. You should make one - more frugal than soda, less boring than water.

As for your yard, why not make it pay for itself? Keep a couple of chickens and you can have free eggs every day. Then plant some food crops, like tomatoes, runner beans, potatoes in a stack of tires. Also start a compost heap (put the chicken poop on it), and make wonderful plant compost out of poop, tea bags and vegetable peelings. It doesn’t have to be time consuming unless you go crazy and plant too many things. The chickens are actually the least time consuming of the things I’ve mentioned.

I’m serious. Chickens. Think about it.

  2. I don’t think my home owner’s association would like chickens. Unless I put up a fence, maybe…

My spouse is also scared of chickens. :)

I do hope someday to put in a garden. I have to figure out what to do about the (seriously) hundred bunnies that live under my shed first… they like to eat gardens….
