Yummy Groceries on a Budget
That did not include 6 glazed and chocolate-iced donuts. But they could have!
Those donuts rode around in my cart, whispering soft nothings to me about their gooey goodness, all over Walmart… but at the checkout I handed them to the cashier and said “I’ve changed my mind about the donuts, thanks” and away they went. I wonder what happens to them then, and how annoyed that makes the cashier, but she didn’t short me 25 cents in change or anything, so it must have been okay.
Someone else can enjoy the gooey donut yummness.
After all was said and done, I spent $54.56 at Aldi and $30.47 at Walmart, for a total of $85.03. Of that, I bought the following non-list items (who wonders when I’ll just start putting iced tea on my list?) :
Hash brown potatoes ($1.19)
Iced tea! ($0.98)
Grapes ($2.79)
For a total of $4.96 of impulse buys or 5.8% of my total spending. Not too bad…. so it might be time to up the challenge to 5%. I think I’ll aim for less than 5% next week.
And someday I should really go through my list and be a little more stringent with it…. I forgive myself lapses very easily. I bought three bags of cereal this week because they were at a good price but they’re all from the “list” because all the list says is “cereals”. I don’t even eat cereal….
The kids were happy though. Especially the big kid (spouse). lol

You rock with your grocery store self! And if it’s that Lipton Green Tea, I so totally don’t blame you!

It’s funny about those bag cereals. Before we became more conscious of our spending, I don’t think I even noticed those. Now they are one of the first things we look for when we need to get cereal (although coupons have kept us buying them so far – crazy the deals you can get on cereal with the right coupons).
Good job on avoiding the donuts!

It is actually Arizona Herbal Tea. It is very tasty. At least in my mind lol.

@Eric – just don’t get Captain Crunch in a bag. At least, that is what my spouse says. he says it is bad. lol.
Coupons are my failing… I really need to buckle down and learn about coupons. Or just get the Sunday paper. i hate to spend money to make money. It is one of my biggest character faults.

Groceries are expensive! We’ve tried to stay within a budget but it’s been really hard. We try to eat organic and healthy because we believe it leads to fewer doctor’s visits but we end up spending more than we’d like. Healthy eating is our insurance against illness but it’s breaking the bank!
