Reorganizing closets ~ Reorganizing life
This morning I began reorganizing my daughter’s closet. I say began because my children do not put up with me doing stuff like that for very long, but I did get a very good start and the framework is there to keep her clothes organized and easily accessible. She has been the recipient of several friends’ generous hand-me-downs in the past few weeks, and I really needed to take everything out and reorganize it so that all the clothes fit nicely and in a way that made sense, and the things that didn’t fit her any longer were removed. I had been sort of sticking all the new things in wherever there was room instead of moving things around to put like things together, etc.
Well, as I was in the process of doing this I thought about how similar reorganizing a closet was to reorganizing our finances. When I first started figuring out a plan for our financial future, things in that proverbial “closet” were a jumbled mess. Many things had gotten pushed back or forgotten about in a neglected corner (those annual bills that always surprised me when they came due), some things didn’t fit any longer and needed to be changed (attitudes toward debt and the vehicles that held our debt), and other things just needed to be reevaluated as to maximize their effectiveness in improving our bottom line (my Roth IRA). We installed a new system (a budget) as a framework to house all the pieces of the financial puzzle effectively. Similarly to how I rearranged the organizers in my daughter’s closet this morning.
The finance overhaul seems to be working well. The jury is still out on the closet.
