I’ve Paid For This Twice Already…

From financial imprisonment to financial independence, one snowflake at a time. This is one family’s story.

Well what do you know? Budgeting works!

PearBudget says that at the end of this month we will have earned $201.66 more than we spent and allocated for future expenses (as long as my estimates for anticipated spending the rest of the month are correct).

So I popped over to my online bank account and looked at my balance, subtracted what is still outstanding, the rest of my anticipated spending this month, and the amount this month that I allocated for future expenses. Lo and behold, I should have $229.82 left over unspent and unallocated (give or take a little bit depending on how much I actually spend on groceries and gasoline before the 31st).

The extra ~$28 is because I didn’t zero out my checking account completely from last month before starting this month, I just guesstimated how much I started with from June’s income and moved that to savings when we got the first July paycheck.

What do you know? Budgeting is actually working to keep track of my “extra” money! Before, that ~$200 would have just gotten absorbed somewhere and I would never have seen it. Now, as soon as my spouse gets his first paycheck next month (the 10th) I can move to our emergency savings account whatever the actual exact amount is that we have left over from the July budget.

Wow. Cool!

And our emergency savings should be a little over $850 at that point. I know we can manage to get it to $1000 by the first September paycheck!

I heart PearBudget. Thank you PearBudget for keeping track of my money!
