How to control consumeristic tendencies

That’s the question not the answer.

There has to be a goal in this “getting out of debt” business.  And as much as I would like the goal to be purely to be able to save more for retirement and secure our futures, often I find myself thinking “When we are out of debt we can…. <insert random vacation/purchase/fun thing here>”.

Like everything, I’m not sure how to find the balance.  I have aspirations of frugality but I lack a lot in the follow-through.  I know part of my goal to get out of debt has to incorporate some “lifestyle inflation” once we are not making debt payments but obviously that can’t be the ONLY goal or we’ll be right back where we started.  But it is so much more fun to dream about new floors and a trip to Florida than it is a growing retirement account.

Or is it?  When did I stop thinking money itself was fun?  When did I become so attached to “things”?

I may be in my 30’s but it is apparent I have a lot more growing up to do.
